The Dolomites - ITALY - UNESCO #1237

The Dolomites are one of the best hiking destinations in the Alps. I've never been there, but several friends of mine have show me pictures they took there and I was always flabbergasted - it must be a really wonderful place. In this card we have the 'Three Peeks of Lavaredo', the central one with 2999m high. Thank you very much Massimo, now I finally have a postcard from there and since it is a UNESCO World Heritage Site it makes my collection grow to 403, reaching 40% of the WHS (already considering the 2014 sites added this weekend), only 604 to finish. This postcard took 5 days to arrive!

UNESCO #1237 - The Dolomites - ITALY

The site of the Dolomites comprises a mountain range in the northern Italian Alps, numbering 18 peaks which rise to above 3,000 metres and cover 141,903 ha. It features some of the most beautiful mountain landscapes anywhere, with vertical walls, sheer cliffs and a high density of narrow, deep and long valleys. It is characterized by dynamic processes with frequent landslides, floods and avalanches. The property also features one of the best examples of the preservation of Mesozoic carbonate platform systems, with fossil records.
