Kotor - MONTENEGRO - UNESCO #125

Today I received my first cards from Montenegro! This small country gain its independence only in 2006 but its historic and cultural heritage is astonishing - for instance this town of Kotor was founded by the Romans on the Adriatic coast and developed into an important commercial and artistic centre with its own famous schools of masonry and iconography. Thank you very much Justine for sending me the 392th UNESCO WHS in my collection (only 589 to finish). This postcard took 11 days to arrive!

UNESCO #125 - Culturo-Historical Region of Kotor - MONTENEGRO

In the Middle Ages, this natural harbour on the Adriatic coast in Montenegro was an important artistic and commercial centre with its own famous schools of masonry and iconography. A large number of the monuments (including four Romanesque churches and the town walls) were seriously damaged by the 1979 earthquake but the town has been restored, largely with UNESCO’s help.
