1972 Olympics, Munich - GERMANY

Two official Postcrossing postcards were waiting for me today at my mailbox! The first one is a beautiful vintage card (older than me!) showing the construction site of the magnificent Olympic Stadium in Munich Germany and the Olympiaturm (the giant TV Tower that was at the time a architecture record with 290m). Thank you very much Wolfgang for this historical vintage card, loved it. This postcard took 12 days to arrive!

The 1972 Summer Olympics was held in Munich, West Germany, from August 26 to September 11, 1972. They were the second Summer Olympics to be held in Germany, after the 1936 Games in Berlin, which had taken place under the Nazi regime. Mindful of the connection, the West German Government was eager to take the opportunity of the Munich Olympics to present a new, democratic and optimistic Germany to the world, as shown by the Games' official motto, "Die Heiteren Spiele", or "the Happy Games.
