Wayang Puppet Theatre - INDONESIA - UNESCO ICH #63
The Wayang Kulit performances are very popular in Indonesia, mainly on the island of Java. According to Shinta, the sender of this beautiful card, the stories are usually drawn from Hindu epics Ramayana and the Mahabharata and the whole performance is done by only one storyteller that narrates the events and move the puppets while a orchestra plays the Gamelan (traditional Java instruments). Thank you very much Shinta, for the card and of course for the awesome 4 stamps with dolls and puppets - this is my 3rd entry on the UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage list. This postcard took 15 days to arrive!
Renowned for its elaborate puppets and complex musical styles, this ancient form of storytelling originated on the Indonesian island of Java. For ten centuries wayang flourished at the royal courts of Java and Bali as well as in rural areas. Wayang has spread to other islands (Lombok, Madura, Sumatra and Borneo) where various local performance styles and musical accompaniments have developed.
