Paphos - CYPRUS - UNESCO #79

This postcard came directly from the place where Aphrodite (Venus for the Romans) was born, Paphos in Cyprus. The importance of the cult of Aphrodite was such that during several centuries, Paphos was the capital city of this island, the third largest in the Mediterranean Sea. Thank you very much Nasia,  you live in a beautiful place that I really wish to visit one day. With this postcard my UNESCO collection reaches 361 WHS, 620 to finish (and only one from Cyprus missing!). This postcard took 19 days to arrive!
UNESCO #79 - Old Castle and Harbour, Paphos Island - CYPRUS
Paphos has been inhabited since the Neolithic period. It was a centre of the cult of Aphrodite and of pre-Hellenic fertility deities. Aphrodite's legendary birthplace was on this island, where her temple was erected by the Myceneans in the 12th century B.C. The remains of villas, palaces, theatres, fortresses and tombs mean that the site is of exceptional architectural and historic value. The mosaics of Nea Paphos are among the most beautiful in the world.
