Tallinn - ESTONIA - UNESCO #822
Today I've received two cards sent by a postcrosser from Estonia, a little country I've planned to visit last year, but at the last moment decided to postpone. This shows the historic center of Tallinn the capital city, a UNESCO site! Thank you very much Maili, I already had one Tallinn card, but it's a vintage card still from soviet times, so I'm really glad you sent me this one showing a modern view. This postcard took 4 days to arrive!
The origins of Tallinn date back to the 13th century, when a castle was built there by the crusading knights of the Teutonic Order. It developed as a major centre of the Hanseatic League, and its wealth is demonstrated by the opulence of the public buildings (the churches in particular) and the domestic architecture of the merchants' houses, which have survived to a remarkable degree despite the ravages of fire and war in the intervening centuries.
