Berlin Modernism Housing Estates - GERMANY - UNESCO #1239
Three more UNESCO WHS postcards from Germany today (I'm almost completing this country entries on the list). This is probably the less atractive postcard in my UNESCO collection (to be honest it look a little bit like a catalog on a home rental agency) and I don't really understand how can this six constructions in Berlin be considered a WHS... ok, they've settled the padron for European modern cities with room for many people in a small space with controled costs and for that reason they should be preserved, but World Heritage seems a bit to much. Thank you Michaela, I don't consider this a beautiful card, but it's great because as it shows all the 6 estates I won't need anymore cards from this site - as for the global numbers, 297 down, 684 to go. This postcard took 7 days to arrive!
The property consists of six housing estates that testify to innovative housing policies from 1910 to 1933, especially during the Weimar Republic, when the city of Berlin was particularly progressive socially, politically and culturally. The property is an outstanding example of the building reform movement that contributed to improving housing and living conditions for people with low incomes through novel approaches to town planning, architecture and garden design. The estates also provide exceptional examples of new urban and architectural typologies, featuring fresh design solutions, as well as technical and aesthetic innovations.
