Trinity Sergius Lavra, Sergiyev Posad - RUSSIA - UNESCO #657

The second card sent by Elena is this amazing view of the Trinity Lavra of St. Sergius in Sergiyev Posad. She wrote that this is considered the most important monastery in Russia, often nicknamed as the "Russian Vatican". Thank you so much Elena for the cards, the explanations you wrote on the back and the amazing stamps you used! Ok now, with this two postcards my UNESCO collection reaches the nice number of 263 WHS, only 718 till the end.  This postcard took 26 days to arrive!

UNESCO #657 - The Trinity Lavra of St.Sergius, Sergiyev Posad - RUSSIA

This is a fine example of a working Orthodox monastery, with military features that are typical of the 15th to the 18th century, the period during which it developed. The main church of the Lavra, the Cathedral of the Assumption (echoing the Kremlin Cathedral of the same name), contains the tomb of Boris Godunov. Among the treasures of the Lavra is the famous icon, The Trinity , by Andrei Rublev.
