Manitowok Brekwater Light - WI - USA
This card came from Wisconsin and shows a lighthouse in Lake Michigan - a lake so large that it often looks and acts more like an ocean (it takes 4 hours to cross it on a steamboat). Thank you very much for this beautiful card Kim. This postcard took 9 days to arrive!
Native Americans called this bay on Lake Michigan Manidoowaak, meaning dwelling of the spirit, because of its natural beauty. The town of Manitowoc was officially founded in 1836, after President Andrew Jackson authorized land sales in the area the previous year. Congress had appropriated $5,000 for construction of the lighthouse at Manitowoc on March 3, 1837.
