Galle Fort - SRI LANKA - UNESCO #451

With this cards I've completed the Sri Lanka UNESCO World Heritage Sites - and this one is very special for me, because the Galle Fort was built by the Portuguese 500 years ago... we were a great nation back then, ruled the commerce and the seas (some say we were the creators of globalization) and it's ironic, thinking the weak economic moment our country lives (with a bankruptcy warning from the IMF)... well better times will come! Thank you very much Du - this is my 99th site (one more to the hundred milestone), only only 892 to the end. This postcard took 21 days to arrive!

UNESCO #451 - Galle Fortification - SRI LANKA
Founded in the 16th century by the Portuguese, Galle reached the height of its development in the 18th century, before the arrival of the British. It is the best example of a fortified city built by Europeans in South and South-East Asia, showing the interaction between European architectural styles and South Asian traditions.

  1. Ah, Joao, this topic is something I've considered that makes us really close - Portuguese and Bulgarians. I mean history. :) We haven't ruled the seas, but many centuries ago we were a great nation and empire and we had our great moments in history, being crucial for the development of Europe..but nobody except from us remembers now as history is always written by the winners, isn't it?
At least what gives me comfort is that maybe it's the inevitable destiny of any great country in the world to turn to decline. Then I''m sure that Portugal and Bulgaria will be back "in business" :-D
