Ancient City of Polonnaruwa - SRI LANKA - UNESCO #201

One more card from Sri Lanka with another Buddha representation, this time in Gal-Vihara on the ancient city of Polonnaruwa. According to the sender, there are monks everywhere and all the foreign visitors must take off their shoes to walk in the city as a sign of respect. Another amazing card - thanks Du! This postcard took 17 days to arrive!

UNESCO #201 - Polonnaruwa - SRI LANKA

Polonnaruwa was the second capital of Sri Lanka after the destruction of Anuradhapura in 993. It comprises, besides the Brahmanic monuments built by the Cholas, the monumental ruins of the fabulous garden-city created by Parakramabahu I. Polonnaruwa bears witness to several civilizations, notably that of the conquering Cholas, disciples of Brahminism, and that of the Sinhalese sovereigns during the 12th and 13th centuries.
