Ferrara - ITALY - UNESCO #733
Italy is one of my favorite countries and unfortunately I only know the main cities (Rome, Milan and Venice)... I really must take a road trip across that beautiful places (and of course send dozens of cards) - maybe next year if the government allows. This Ferrara card was another direct swap, many thanks Irene - while I wait for official cards swapping is a nice way to meet POSTCROSSING users and build my postcard collection, specially the UNESCO sites... 9 down, 953 to go - I wonder which will be the next? This postcard took 7 days to arrive!
Ferrara, which grew up around a ford over the River Po, became an intellectual and artistic center that attracted the greatest minds of the Italian Renaissance in the 15th and 16th centuries. Here, Piero della Francesca, Jacopo Bellini and Andrea Mantegna decorated the palaces of the House of Este. The humanist concept of the 'ideal city' came to life here in the neighborhoods built from 1492 onwards by Biagio Rossetti according to the new principles of perspective. The completion of this project marked the birth of modern town planning and influenced its subsequent development.
